The Meaning of Green

GROWTH, HEALING, AND NEW BEGINNINGS

Some colours demand attention. Green simply invites us to slow down, breathe, and begin again.

THE MEANING OF GREEN

Green is the colour of fresh leaves after rain, moss-covered stones, quiet forests and the first little shoots appearing through the soil. It sits somewhere between the warmth of yellow and the coolness of blue, creating a colour that often feels balanced, restful and reassuring. But green is more than a colour we associate with nature. Across cultures and traditions, it has gathered meanings of renewal, hope, prosperity, harmony and growth. And perhaps its loveliest message is that growth doesn't have to happen all at once.

What Does Green Symbolise?

STREAM.png

Green is often associated with life, fertility, renewal and fresh beginnings. In nature, it signals the return of growth after periods of rest. A new leaf, a tiny seedling or a landscape recovering after rain can all become beautiful reminders that change is part of life. Of course, green isn't always gentle. It can also symbolise envy, inexperience or uncertainty. That's what makes colour so interesting. Its meaning depends on culture, context and our own experiences.

“Nature never hurries its seasons. Perhaps we don't need to hurry ours.”

The Psychology of Green

Green is commonly associated with calm, balance, and restoration.

Research into natural environments suggests that spending time around greenery can support wellbeing and stress recovery, although we shouldn't assume that looking at green alone produces the same effects.

Still, there's something wonderfully inviting about bringing a little green into our everyday spaces.

Sometimes colour helps us create the atmosphere we're longing for.

The Many Personalities of Green

Each shade tells a slightly different story. Deep forest greens can feel protective and grounding, while pale sage feels softer and more contemplative. Fresh yellow-greens bring a sense of energy and possibility.

These are associations rather than fixed rules — your own response to a colour matters just as much.

Green in Nature and Symbolism

Green appears in many traditions as a symbol of life and renewal. It's also associated with the heart chakra in modern chakra colour systems, representing love, compassion and emotional balance.

Whether we approach these ideas spiritually or simply appreciate them as symbolism, green offers a lovely invitation to reconnect with the natural world.

Perhaps that's why a walk beneath the trees can feel like returning to something familiar.

Bringing More Green Into Your Day

You don't need to repaint your walls or redesign your home.

Try keeping a little greenery where you work, wearing a shade that makes you feel comfortable, photographing the different greens on your next walk, or making a tiny colour palette inspired by your garden.

You might even discover that the green you love most isn't the green you expected.

A Little Nature Ritual

Step outside and find three different shades of green. Notice their colours, textures and how they make you feel.

Your Tonic for Today

Find three different shades of green around you.

Perhaps one is deep and shadowy, another soft and silvery, and another bright with new growth.

Notice how each makes you feel.

Then gently ask yourself:

“Where in my life could I make a little room for new growth?”

You don't have to change everything.

Sometimes a new beginning is as small as allowing yourself to grow in a different direction.

Green & the Heart Chakra

In modern chakra traditions, green is associated with the Heart Chakra, also known as Anahata — a Sanskrit word often translated as “unstruck” or “unhurt.” Located symbolically at the centre of the chest, the Heart Chakra is considered the meeting place between our physical and spiritual selves. It is associated with love, compassion, forgiveness, emotional balance and our ability to connect with ourselves and others. While we often think of love as pink or red, green offers a different perspective. It represents a quieter, more expansive kind of love — one rooted in acceptance, kindness and the gentle understanding that we, too, deserve compassion. Much like nature, which grows, rests, changes and begins again, the symbolism of the Heart Chakra reminds us that emotional growth isn't always about moving forward. Sometimes it's about softening, allowing and making room for what we feel. In spiritual practices, working with the colour green may involve meditation, visualisation, spending time in nature or simply bringing more green into everyday surroundings. These are symbolic and reflective practices rather than scientifically established ways of changing the body's energy. And perhaps that's the loveliest connection between green and the heart. Both remind us that growth and gentleness can exist together.
